The Surrendered is part of a period where I was exploring landscapes with expansive skies and grounding them in chaotic flowers. Unlike some of the lighter pieces from that time, this painting turns toward the night. A layered, storm-tossed sky sweeps across the canvas, its motion shaped by both brushwork and scraped-back textures. At the base, a band of flowers holds the earth, a fragile counterpoint to the turbulence above.
This darker vision carries a sense of surrender—of giving way to forces larger than oneself. The swirling night and storm evoke endings, change, and mortality, while the flowers suggest a quiet persistence in the face of it. The Surrendered is a meditation on death not as a single moment, but as a vast and shifting horizon, one we all eventually face.
